Bauhaus-Archiv and Cultural Forum
English-language walking tour
Even though the Bauhaus Archive will still be closed for some time, you can already experience the site from a new perspective. The walk starts at the former and future location of world’s most extensive Bauhaus collection. Here, the restoration of the Archive building with the distinctive shed roofs in accordance with the conservation regulations and its expansion are currently under way. From the bauhaus view lookout, you can gaze over the construction site and onto the extension planned by Berlin architect Volker Staab, which will offer plenty of space for exhibition and educational work in the future. Along the Landwehr Canal past exciting buildings dating back to the International Building Exhibition from the 1980s, the tour leads to the Cultural Forum, which has once again become an architectural highlight boasting the reopened New National Gallery and the much-discussed Museum of the 20th Century currently under construction. Designs by two Bauhaus directors – Walter Gropius and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe – as well as the influences of modern Bauhaus ideas and the future of the Cultural Forum will be examined more closely during the tour.
